Is banging two objects together a fine motor skill? Why?

Our baby loves to bang objects together - its his new noisy but cute obession. I wonder if this is just play or is actually a developing skill? I really love that he can now hold two objects in both hands at the same time. He always used to drop one to pick up the other - even if the hand was free haha.
